Month: January 2019

Photo a Day – Week Forty Three and Forty Four

Here are the first couple of weeks of the year.

This is a close up of one of the new apple trees. I love that bark colour. So shiny and interesting.

If only I found ‘downward facing dog’ as easy as he does…… Plus chewing something he shouldn’t be!

The Hellebores are coming.

Winter sky.

Seems it was all about bark! This is one of our older apple trees. Just as interesting but in a totally different way.

And another sky. This one a sunrise.

Amazing Clematis seed heads.

Frost on that wreath.

Scene from my morning.

Trying to have a healthy lunch at work….

And then blowing that by venturing out to a coffee shop that still had eggnog latte on the menu. Oh dear we do love our eggnog…..

Some snow at last.

It stayed till the morning but didn’t last long.

I told you they were coming.

And there we go.

Layout Share – Oh Fun

Another story from the 2017 holiday.

Oh Fun

Here’s the story –

Riding on a carousel was on H’s summer list so we had to have a go right? It was a fav. I loved the simplicity of it, the old fashioned ness. It was magical and non scary! I felt young and full of fun. A real treat.

Loved using this bright and cheerful paper to go with the photo of me on that Disney World ride. Gav did a great job catching me as we twirled round and round. Such a great story to have in the books. Simple but perfect for that.

When we went to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower we also wandered through town and popped into this University Garden. Said to be the first botanical garden attached to a ‘University’ and formed in 1544 although not on this current site.

It was worth visiting but did seem a little run down. The specimen beds seen in the photo below didn’t have many specimens in them and there were overgrown neglected paths and areas.

But like I say worth the visit anyway.

And we came across this very interesting screen…..

Looked like it was protecting this pine tree from the sun!

And there was a small area with annuals and a sweet wildlife ‘hotel’.

Loved that brick gateway.

Not the best we have seen but another added to my total!

What I Hope to Read in 2019…….

Do you know I bought that wooden shelf unit about 15 years ago. I remember it well and was so happy to bring it home. The plan of course was to put it on the wall…… As you can see that never happened and it has sat by my side of the bed in that spot all this time.

I know what you’re thinking. What does that shelf have to do with reading? Well for the past 8 years it has had the same books sat on it. Gathering dust and bleaching out the pages where they extended out of the shelf. Who knew that would happen? Anyway I was inspired to clear it out at the start of this year and sort through my large ‘to be read pile’ with the intention of only putting back what I hoped to read this year.

I have recently fallen into the trap of hoarding books I know I won’t read. My Mum gives me some and I buy some on impulse from Barter Books but then wonder why as I just know they’ll stay untouched. It is time to let them go.

The ones I selected to return to the shelf are a mix of very old, old and new! Non-fiction and fiction. I will definitely read others that are not on the pile….. I mean there are no Jack Reacher and I can’t go a year without him! But I’ll start here and see what happens.

Photo a Day – Week Forty One and Forty Two

Back with some more photos. But first a word on two missing weeks! I decided not to share weeks thirty nine and forty. Many photos are included in December Daily and I felt as if I was duplicating and showing the same things over again so I have broken with tradition and decided to skip those two weeks.

So here we are with week forty one.

Helped Gav plant four step over apple trees. Does this count as ‘plant and orchard’ which is on my list…..

Dog walks with my sister.

One of a set of lovely wooden decorations that my Mum bought me years ago.

A sleepover and she made pancakes for breakfast.

Gav has a new game on the x-box. I was thinking about this photo. Sometimes, most times we ‘edit’ our lives to show them in the best light. That’s social media for ya! But sometimes I like to see the real life. The mess. This is an excellent example. Shoes by the door, cups and glasses, a plate with chocolate wrappers on it, a random pair of scissors! I love my house when it’s neat and tidy but that is not my day to day reality. Good to remember that.

And week forty two.

Christmas is not Christmas without Panettone. Gav bought me a teeny choc/orange one. Yum.

First self timer of the year. Or should I say first failed self timer of the year. Look at the pooch!

Here he is again.

Last of the Christmas cheese.

Blurry but wonderful. Here in the UK we tend to take out decorations down before twelfth night. I wanted to celebrate the season one last time so lit lots of candles and we ate dinner in here (we are very bad and usually eat on our knees!) It was a lovely evening and the photo sums it up perfectly.

A part finished wreath. Next year I’m starting earlier.

Light on terracotta pots.

And there goes another two weeks.

Click Tick List – Photograph 100 Gardens – Villa Reale di Marlia

Sharing another wonderful visit to a Tuscan garden today. Full of character, follies, pools and even a disused swimming pool, the gardens of Villa Reale were a treat. And the amazing thing was we only saw four other visitors while we were there.

Even the walk from car to garden was even lined with cyclamen.

Perfect vista looking towards the main villa.

The garden itself was sprawling and beautiful with different areas such as the potted citrus garden below.

The light of course was amazing with that blue sky contrasting the greens and architecture so well.

A pretty knot garden tucked away at the side of one of the many buildings on the estate.

Sculpture and urns, topiary and fountains it was all packed in.

Along with the largest Hibiscus I’ve ever seen!

Truly lovely afternoon spent meandering and of course another added towards my 100!

December Daily® 2018 – Day Eight to Day Thirteen

More from this little project.

Day Eight began with this red envelope and a lovely star.

I removed the star and made a spread all about making the Christmas pudding and then going to                    to see the first Star Wars film accompanied by a live orchestra! It was amazing. Would definitely recommend this kind of concert.

Day nine is a photo on the back of the Star Wars picture of the crazy pooch laying as close to the                  fire as he can…..

Day ten began as a velum page.

I kept the vellum and added a big title onto a photo of the back of our house for day ten. You                    can’t really see him but Buddy is sat by the doors looking out at me. Always love a ‘looking in’                photo.

For day eleven I added a picture of making Christmas cakes and slipped the story into the pocket                I’d already made for this day. A strip of washi tape adds a little colour.

Day twelve was all about the purchasing of our T.V magazine of choice for festive telly watching.

Very busy day thirteen which began like this.

I kept the number and made another spread with a couple of photos and in between them I                      added an envelope with the story on the outside.

Love this photo of my Mum and our youngest family member.

And of course my darling niece. We went to see Bohemian Rhapsody at the cinema.

And finally for this update day fourteen.

I added the two labels from a new little tree into a pocket page. I thought it was interesting that                      they told you on the label how to look up where the tree had been grown. It was something that                needed to be kept.

Okay back with the rest soon.

Layout Share – Good Times on the People Mover

Way back in October I shared a layout from our 2017 USA trip and said I was hoping to wrap up the album by the end of the month. Seems that no goal setting stuck in 2018!

But…… A new year brings new enthusiasm and while I was putting all the Christmas things away and getting December Daily finished I found the aforementioned album at the bottom of piles of festive stuff! I hadn’t so much forgotten about it just one of those phases of doing other hobbies and putting scrapping to one side.

I have tidied my desk and have photos and post it notes laid out up there. I also have Project Life all over the dining room table…………. I’ll get there.

Anyway I thought I’d share a page that is complete.

Good Times on the People Mover

Here is the story –

So glad we waited in the queue for them to fix this sweet little ride. I remember I loved it the first              time in 2013 with Bev etc. And really loved taking Gav on it this time. A perfect vantage point above the crowds to see all around. One of my favourite moments.

Love this page and the story. Looking forward to getting the rest of this album finished! Onwards.

What I Read in 2018 – A Recap

What can I say? My goal to read two books a month in 2018 has failed. I think my total is only seventeen….. No wait! I forgot another Jack Reacher book…..Eighteen.  Oh well never mid eh? There is always 2019…….

Here are all the books from 2018 –

  • A Cotswold Ordeal – Rebecca Tope
  • Bad Luck and Trouble – Lee Child
  • Maise Dobbs – Jaqueline Winspear
  • The Visitor – Lee Child
  • The Paper Moon – Andrea Camilleri
  • Rooted in Evil – Ann Granger
  • Murder in the Museum – John Rowland
  • Without Fail – Lee Child
  • A Presumption of Death – Jill Patton Walsh and Dorothy L Sayers
  • The Affair – Lee Child
  • August Heat – Andrea Camilleri
  • 61 Hours – Lee Child
  • The Attenbury Emeralds – Jill Patton Walsh
  • The Enemy – Lee Child
  • Tripwire – Lee Child
  • Turbo Twenty Three – Janet Evanovich
  • The Little Scholar – Jill Patton Walsh
  • Make Me – Lee Child

You can see that I stayed firmly in my comfort zone and read an awful lot of Reacher. But I’m okay with it. I’ll pop back soon with my reading plan for 2019.
